Vine City, nestled in the heart of Atlanta’s Westside, has long been a cradle of African American culture and civil rights leadership. Once home to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta Scott King, and Atlanta’s first Black millionaire Alonzo Herndon, the neighborhood flourished in the mid-20th century as a hub of Black middle-class life and political activism. Hunter Street — now Martin Luther King Jr. Drive — was a vital artery of commerce and community, lined with Black-owned businesses, churches, and institutions like Paschal’s Restaurant, a meeting place for civil rights leaders.

Despite decades of disinvestment and displacement, Vine City remains a symbol of resilience. Preserving Hunter Street is not just about saving buildings — it’s about honoring the soul of a community that helped shape American history.

The MLK Merchants Assoc. is dedicated to preserving, restoring, and celebrating the historic legacy of Hunter Street in Vine City, Atlanta. We strive to protect its cultural landmarks, amplify its civil rights history, and empower the community through education, advocacy, and sustainable development. Our mission is to ensure that the spirit of Hunter Street — once a thriving corridor of Black excellence, activism, and enterprise — continues to inspire future generations.
